I feel fortunate to be living in the time that I do, as what has so far, and what will still happen in my lifetime will probably end up being a huge part of the earth/human/nature story.
When I was a teenager I can remember getting fearful about the economy, a war or terrorism BUT always in the back of my mind I thought "It will all be OK - THEY won't let anything bad happen.". By THEY - I mean TPTB (the powers that be). Luckily that only lasted for about 5 years and after seeing a bit of the world and understanding human nature more, I realized that THEY (no matter what country) have little more idea than I what to do about many things and are also so biased by politics, lobbyists and corporations that even if THEY knew what should be done - the chances of it happening are almost zero as it would go against the very people that helped them get where THEY are.
Case in point yesterday. The 'Geithner' press conference. The whole country wanted to hear exactly what will be done to help the economy and the guy said NOTHING at all! It was another speech where you get to the end and think - HUH! what the hell was that! Couple that with the shameful stimulus bill going through right now and I think THEY have no clue about what is really happening in the world.
The stimulus bill will encourage people to go out and buy houses they can't afford (for the tax break) and cars they don't need (for the tax break) which will boost the economy until those people realize that they can't afford what they just purchased and there we are back where we started but EVEN MORE IN DEBT! I just cannot believe that they propose the same bad thinking that got us into this problem, will get us out of it! And unfortunately, I can already hear folks around me getting excited about a new house or a new car or what to do with their stimulus check. I know of 3 or 4 people that just booked expensive vacations on their credit cards in advance of the stimulus check they expect. People just don't get that we have gone as far as we can with the growth economy and we cannot go any further. We are just prolonging the inevitable. People don't want to hear it and the Govt don't dare to suggest it.
To me it has become a psychological project that I am detached from and watching with interest. I just pray that I have my own house in order before too long.

I guess you could look at the Geithner news conference and it essential message of "nothing" as the result of what will happen to change this situation.
I just think we have dug ourselves a deep whole and we will never get out of it. I can only hope that what they are doing will allow me to invest in my own "infrastructure" at home. Finish our barn, few more tools for the garden, seed, bulk foods. Because, a year from now, I think we could be in even worse shape.
Joanne, I agree with your pessimism about the "They". Thinking in terms of "they" is arguably built-in to our language system, thinking of "the They" is a way for us to abstract away the immediacy of being.
And now, we have a new "They" in Obama, the savior of liberals. I have been in part pessimistic, and in part hopeful that Obama might represent a step in the right direction. It's been less than a month and time will tell, but so far I don't think he will be the Gandhi of the New America, as some have suggested.
We need to rethink our abstractions, and adopt more core concepts that increase sustainability and positivity more than "competition" and "profit" and "production" and "employment" and "money" and "fear" and "terrorism" seem to be able to do.
I often struggle with spending too much energy on this stuff; I do believe it is important to know where we are and what we face, but I also believe that we create our realities, so less time spent being angry and frustrated the better. As a friend of mine says, "if you're outraged, rage wins."
THE REAL PROBLEM IS NOBODY DARE SAY THE OBVIOS, THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT GOT THEM SELFS IN A FIX (WITH A LOT OF HELP FROM THEY THAT KNOW )HAVE TO BITE THE BULLET, DRAW A LINE AND START FROM SCRATCH REMEMBER THAT OLD SAYING LOOK AFTER YOUR PENNY,S AND THE POUNDS WILL LOOK AFTER THEM SELFS. PEOPLE HAVE TO REMEMBER THEY ARE THEIR OWN MASTERS AND MUST ACT ON IT.......MOST OF THE PEOPLE IN TROUBLE ARE NOT THE ONES THAT HAVE NOTHING,, ITS THE ONES THAT WANT WHAT THEY CAN NOT AFFORD,,DAD
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result ;).
The decline we're experiencing right now actually started a long time ago, and they've been doing the same things in trying to fix it. It's ... well, it's insane.
I wont feed you any socialist gobbly-gook in my comment. However, living above our means has become commonplace in this country, and it rests in ideal of "entitlement."
We "deserve" this house, or car, or PS3, or 3 cell phones...or whatever.
What we deserve is a swift kick in the *ss for trying to live like royalty.
Dump the DishTV, Dump the phones, the cable internet, the 3000 Sq ft house we'll never pay off...Dump the meaningless college degrees in "Celtic philosophies" and "Mystic Shamanism."
"Subscriptions" (ie Monthly Bills) are the cause of our issues... Not lack of income or "wage slavery."
